Mind to Muscle Connection

In this video you will hear about the importance of the mind to muscle connection. It is important to form this connection while training to optimize your workout. Whether your goal is pump workouts to look jacked, lean, and tan, or to add some thickness in the off season, you must be making the mind to muscle connection.

Establishing the Connection

The best way to start feeling the connection between your mind and the muscle group you are training is to leave your ego at the door. If you are NOT feeling the connection while doing a bicep curl, or bench press, you must drop the weight, and up your rep range. Training with more of a volume based workout will help move more blood, and you will be moving a weight that you can get clean repetitions with. You will begin to feel more of a pump, which in turn will make more of a connection with your muscle group. This is why we say leave the ego at the door. Starting with a weight you can move for good clean reps will help optimize your workouts. Volume based training is great when starting out AND if you are looking to maintain lean muscle gains. 

Example set/rep ranges:

  • 4 x 10-12reps
  • 4 x 12-15reps
  • Goal: clean reps, feel the contraction, pump blood

Adding Thickness/Size

So now we know how Volume or higher rep workouts can aide you in making the mind to muscle connection, but what if you want to add some thickness or size to your physique? With the mind to muscle connection now established, you can now use this principle to add on size/thickness. If you are looking to add size, drop your rep ranges to 4, 6, or 8 reps and up the weight. YOU MUST STILL APPLY THE PRINCIPLE OF CLEAN REPS, BUT MAKE SURE YOU ARE WORKING FOR EVERY REP! Use that mind to muscle connection while warming up, and then when its time for those 6-8 rep working sets, your muscles will already be firing. Stay in control of the weight, and always remember if you are not feeling it, drop the weight, and re-connect with the muscle. If you don't feel it, it's not working!

  • 4 x 4-6reps
  • 4 x 6-8reps
  • Goal: warm up/establish pump, move heavier weight 4, 6 or 8 reps, STAY IN CONTROL, BUT MOVE THE WEIGHT!
